Audience Research on my Ancillary Task

Here are two of examples of me using social networking sites to get feedback for my work. Here is an example of somebody giving me feedback on my work, from my blog.

Audience Research Results

These are the results of my audience research:
  1. What do you think of my colour scheme? All of the responses said that it was either good or very good, so i will keep them the same.
  2. What do you think of the fonts i used? Everybody said that my fonts were good, so i won't need to change them as they are relevant for my target audience.
  3. What do you think of the layout? The response i received said that my layout was good for the audience and that i don't need to change it.
  4. What do you think of the images i have used? The responses told me that the images were very good and that they were relevant for the audience.
  5. Do you think the language is appropriate for my target audience? All said that the language was good, therefore i don't need to change.
  6. What do you think is the strongest part of my ancillary task? This was an open question. People said that the colour scheme and the images was the best part.
  7. What do you think i could make improvements on? People said that the font needed some work, so i will have to make some changes to that, so that it appeals to the target audience.

Levis-Strauss' theory explains the use of binary opposites, this is shown throughout the opening sequence as London and Maddie are shown as opposites. The sequence shows London wearing very bright girly clothes with shopping bags, being a typical girl, whereas Maddie is wearing quite tomboyish clothing.

Barthes says that texts use 5 narrative codes to attract the audience. First, action, in this opening you see the close relationship of the twins as at the start of the opening they do the same hand movement at the same time, so this automatically relates them to one another making the audience see the relationships of the characters. Secondly enigma, this is shown by what mischievous actions, like when they slide out of the tunnel, inside the hotel. Thirdly the semic-code, this is shown through the props and costume of the characters, see Mr Mosbey as an important man as he is wearing a suit and tie, this shows that he must have an important job. Fourthly the symbolics, this is the difference between the characters. This is is shown between the two girls and having the symoblic "spoilt" girl props and costumes. Finally cultural, this is the stereotypes used. One stereotype is the girly, spoilt, rich girl this is shown by the pink and sparkly outfits.

Propp's theory explains that their is 8 character roles, this is shows through the opening of the sequence. The "heroes" are Zack and Cody, they are the main characters and get the most air time in the opening sequence The father role is the mother of them. The actress is clearly older and her mature clothing shows her as the adult. The princess is London as she is portrayed as the girly character by the costumes used, consisting of pink clothing. Maddie is the "helper", this is shown by her pushing the luggage trolly. that she is there for help. Mr Mosby can be seen as the villain, through the water being thrown over him, it makes the audience think that the twins play pranks on him.

Audience theory analysis

The Hypodermic needle model that Adorno suggests states that a message is injected into the a passive audience. This clip shows this by making the audience believe all teenagers are fun, energetic and happy. The theme song could be taken as though its being sung to the audience directly.
The text would have an encoded message according to Hall’s Encoding/Decoding theory. He believes that a producer would encode a text to an active audience, giving them a preferred reading that they audience will see. In this sequence it shows that the programme is fun and exciting, which in an open sequence is what you want as it makes the audience want to keep watching. They have done this in the extract by using upbeat music, bright editing and making the actions of the characters very overdramatized, giving the extract it’s preferred reading.
Blumler and Katz’s gratification model says that an audience has a list of “needs”. These needs are diversion, personal relationships, personal identity and surveillance. There is diversion within this sequence as it gives the audience an opportunity to see what it is like for other teenagers, and it makes them relative. The target audience would be able to relate to the characters and think they could be just like them, but at the same time, it takes them away from their everyday routines. Personal relationships within the extract makes you as a viewer, want to be friends with these characters and be a part of the fun and excitement they always appear to have. Personal identity gives the audience something they can relate to. They can get used to what the character is like and feel like they are literally getting to know the characters. Surveillance is the final need, as they get to see where the characters are, they get an insight into how they should be behaving in such environments.
